Will attempt to write my post combining modern and Biblical influences. Ahem:

FUNKKIANS (Ivan's letter to the group of Funkk)

From Ivan, a believer in Christ Jesus. To God's holy people living in various parts of Singapore, who congregate at the 4th-6th row of St James' Church every Sunday at 11:00 pm to block other people's view of the lyrics.

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. What's up dawgs?

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his infinite mercy, He allowed me to use my rashes as a valid excuse to skip two days of my field camp. I, in fact, was allowed to book out on Wednesday morning to visit a skin specialist at Changi General Hospital (who tripled my dosage of steroids) so I could sample the freedom of life here for a morning.

Unfortunately my skin had so improved by Wednesday that the medical officer decided that I was good to go for the field camp. Of course, at first I took it as the greatest calamity that had befallen the world since I entered BMT, as did all my other platoon-mates who skipped field camp because of various illnesses. However, God is the One who makes everything agree with what he decides and wants; and in times of suffering and darkness, God's light can shine ever more brightly. In fact just before I left I flipped my Bible open to the passage I was meaning to do that day:

"Do everything without complaining or arguing. Then you will be innocent and without anything wrong in you. You will be God's children without fault. But you are living with crooked and mean people all around you. Among them you shine like stars in the dark world." - Philippians 2:14-15, International Children's Bible (Yes, I left my NIV in camp again, not enough space to bring it back).

Which is why I was rejoicing despite the fact that the quagmire which was my field camp was a great trial; torrential rain leading to leaking and flooded tent, extreme muddied belongings, stuff from the natural toilet flowing into our campsite, bitter cold, bad-tempered sergeants and suffering recruits. Amazingly we managed to keep our morale up most of the time, by joking about the conditions. And God has already given me so many blessings; two days less of field camp, three weeks less of BMT, so many public holidays, great friends, so what am I complaining about?

I'm complaining about Paul's pompous writing style that is so hard to emulate.

Brothers, to those still engaged in the daily grind of school, persevere. Remember that each moment can be an act of worship unto the Lord, even not falling asleep in lectures. And you will be amply repaid one or two years later; while I can only cross my fingers and pray.

Some of you (just one, actually) are working! Well just do something nice for the boss's son... or his friends... and maybe get a bonus!

Finally, to those contemplating a new mission field, I am sure as the year progresses you will get a stronger sense of where the Lord is leading you. I, too, hope to live overseas in future; but only during my university studies. Maybe if I choose the University of Vancouver... haha. We will talk more about this after I secure my release.

May God's peace be with all of you. Next time I shall just use a normal writing style.

Today was SIMPLY TORRID!! Spent the entire day in school in band!! Arghh! Woke at like 8 am, then rush down to school to find in absolute horror, that it was band orientation for JC 1s!! Argh! Whats worse was that i did not bring a change of clothes so no games for me... Worse still, had to run errands... Run to coronation plaza to order food etc etc... So tiring...

Then when band practice did actually start at 2.30 pm... Wasted another 15 minutes when the other bands were warming up... Then when the conductor came in, he started scolding everybody and had to sit there and listen... Sigh... Then when it was 3+, we then actually played some music LOTR soundtrack and some Leroy Anderson thing... Haha...

Hope u guys are enjoying ur weekend... Oh and I'll be having my STJ session tmr... Guess i can't go fer JYM then... And match is on Monday 9 am at Tanglin pitch 3!! Remember and remind others!!:D

sup. had interclass football today and my class finished runners-up. so i'm satisfied. we lost in the final by a single goal, and the goal was a total fluke. i was playing free role in midfield, and since it was a 7 on 7, i had to be attacking midfielder cum central midfielder cum defensive midfielder. and we were playing on the fullsize soccer pitch lor..haha.. it killed me within 5 minutes man. anyway, it has served as a good warm up to the match against hwa chong..it did help my fitness and my confidence..

in other news, yeah..i'm quite sure i'm goin off to canada. although i'm quite apprehensive about it in terms of taking care of myself and leaving my friends behind, but on the other hand i also felt that if i do not seize this opportunity now, it won't wait for me. but it's only january and it's tough to say any much more than this. who knows..i may be thinking this is my last year in singapore throughout the rest of the year, then in december my parents may suddenly change their minds and disapprove.
if you ask me today, i don't know whether God is for the decision..but i'll continue to pray about it..

but if i go..i'll be enrolled in high-school, hopefully one of those in vancouver so that i can turn to my vancouven relatives when i run out of money and stuff.. i also hope the school is active in sports..so i can join their soccer team and stuff..but i'll be in Grade12 and i don't know whether Grade12 students get to take part in sports and stuff..cos u know, Grade12 is graduating year. YOU SEE, THAT'S THE SINGAPORE MENTALITY DRIVEN INTO MY MIND. in singapore, exams come before EVERYTHING else. our entire social life is consumed by exams. it's a real blackhole in many ways - we stop doing sports, we stop hanging out in the malls...but i believe canada is different. at least i know their style of teaching is different anyway..more discussion, less spoon-feeding..less hardcore mugging.. i think education is all about developing the brain..not about stuffing our brains with information.. that's why i dunno why i'm taking history..although the sourcebased part is good, but i think the essay part should be converted to a comprehension question kinda thing, in which you analyse information THAT IS GIVEN TO YOU during the exam itself. knowaamean dawg. ok i know, if you're readin this you're probably thinking that i want to be more lazy..

hope i make close canadian friends there..be in a clique or something like that, which will help me settle in..but one year wouldn't be enough to establish that kinda bonding that we the funkk group have right now..and my closest friends would probably be those living with me in the hostel, who will be international students, who may be singaporeans. oh dawg..hope that ain't the case..actually i wish one of you guys can go with me..but i'm afraid if that happens, i'll become less sociable over there and that'll work against me. aiya..it's only january..and i'm speaking as if we're in december.

after highschool i can either go to college, or go straight to university..where i'll spend probably a minimum of 3 years. if God and myself are willing, i may spend the rest of my life in canada..haha..aw man, my imagination is losing its bearings..

in other news, wanna thank God for such a great prayer meeting last night. great time of divine exchange..

till then, it's ryan who's boring you, and that's the way the cookie crumbles.

yo. back from malaysia, scum of asia. went there to feed malaysian mosquitoes. i think singapore is doing a good job preventing the breeding of mosquitoes..the only reason why we still get bitten here is because malaysian mosquitoes make frequent flights across the straits of johor.

sorry guys, couldn't play for youth focus thanks to family obligations in malaysia.. of all places. i really really really wanted to play.. tell me how it went..

well, think i had a good enough chinese new year..watched 4 movies at my relatives' places. Snow Dogs, a 3-star comedy in my opinion; I Am Sam, one of the greatest movies in the world - you've gotta catch it. watched Bend it like Beckham a second time..it's not that good (no offence against junxu), avoid wasting your time unless you're junxu - the word 'beckham' in the title makes it more popular than it is worthy of being, really.. and i watched Bruce Almighty a second time!! ye-air. the movie of my life. that'll NOT be the last time i'll watch it.

In other news, the swedish prime minister visited the united states today, and i can do the cha-cha. i love to do the cha-cha.

back to school..havin' inter-class football this week. kinda nervous about it man..expectations are high..we wanna be champions..ye-air CHAMPIONS. quite impossible i would say.. and next monday's the day man, we gotta record our second win.

that's about it from me. till then, it's ryan from buffalo, new york, and that's the way the cookie crumbles.

-dan'sdaman-

haha, just read finished brenda's blog.. and what happened to her happened to me before too.. when i was sec 1, after my auntie's funeral, i didn't take a break and went to sch.. then when the teacher said who didn't do their work, i stood up and walked towards her trying to explian, and before i could start speaking she went like, " ah why didn't you do your work? i said this work if you don't do by today you can leave my class right??!!" damn fierce. haha then i told her why i couldn't do it and while saying that i just started crying.. don't know why also. then also because the day before was the funeral so i stayed up til very late and woke up late, and reached sch like 10 minutes late so my student pass got confiscated. i was supposed to get it from the discipline master. he asked me for the reason i was late and as i told him tears started welling up too.. haha don't know maybe it's just me..

anyway, wow this year's new year i got like the most ever, and it's only the first day, cause my dad's best friend gave me a lot a lot.. and his grandma gave me a lot too.. haha and during visitations i kept thinking of my dream to become a musician, and like all the adults were giving me advice, and i met the sons of my dad's friend.. one was working in usa, san jose, and the other was studying in berkeley(is that the correct spelling?).. and it was so cool to like talk to them about the usa.. told them i wanted to do jazz, and all that.. haha yeahh.. while i'll think about my life as my life goes on, and God will guide me too..

anyway, going off now, have to visit my pri. sch principal before going to henry and maggies' house. looking forward to that. alrighty, bye for now.

oh yeah! i just watched liverpool season review 2002-2003 this morning. LIVERPOOL ROCKS!! we are going to the champions league!!!!!!!!!!

WA BLOGGER THANKS A LOT K. i type out everything suddenly just disappeared. freak.
ok what i wanted to say is ryan, whatever about the man utd comments, and nice liverpool comments.
i was saying how i came to support liverpool. During the 98-99 season, i supported man utd. But then gradually i came to realise i truely support liverpool. Watching them win and score makes me damn happy, which is why i came to support liverpool, and not really because they play very good football, which actually they don't really do now.

so anyway, i've joined canoeing in RJC.
Originally i had etched out in my mind and purposed in my heart that i would join basketball. But after my friend told me how training went on monday, i began to see the options i had should i join canoeing..

1) I'm a canoeist, and had even gotten a bronze, so i'll most most likely likely be in the racing team this year.

2) My partner who i won the bronze with is also in RJC canoeing, so itt's even better cause we are like way in front of other pple in terms of experience and coordination stuff..

3) I've a chance of winning something, where in basketball i most probably would play in the reserves.

4) i can build up my body and not be so thin.

5)I'll have the priviledge of thrashing the ass of my dear friend, Lye Junxu James, who's joining NJC canoeing.

6) If my O levels like turn out real bad, i can appeal into RJC using canoeing.

Hence you can see there are really good reasons for me to join canoeing which i did, and had training on monday and would be peddaling in kallang waters in about 8.5 hours.

so yeah that's from me.
good night.

just to keep the blog goin'..

i would just like to declare my love for manchester united football club.. "for i am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate me from the love" taken out of context from Romans 8:38-39.

yes, even if they get relegated, even if they go into adminstration, i would still remain behind them. "blessed is the man who perserveres under trial" taken out of context from James1:12. i love manchester united because of 5 reasons..

1. the 1958 munich air crash - they lost half their squad, yet picked themselves up and fought their way back to the top division.. duncan edwards, manutd's most promising young talent, who made his england debut at 18, died in hospital after saying these last words "what time is the kick off this saturday? i can't miss it."
2. a manager of a champions league club (think it was dortmund) once said after a game against manutd "other teams may have better individuals, but no club has a better team than manutd" ye-air. manutd really knows what team football is all about. plus, manutd has really great team spirit. roy keane scolds ryan giggs like hell when the latter makes a mistake, then when ryan giggs scores, he's the first to celebrate the goal with him.
3. manutd finished third in the 01/02 season. they became champions in the 02/03 season by only signing on one new player, rio ferdinand. its not as if ferdinand had such a dramatic effect on the team.. rather, it just goes to show how determined manutd can be..
4. no manutd player has pointed to his name printed on the back of his shirt after scoring. every manutd player plays for the team's glory. well..maybe not cantona and beckham..
5. manutd fans are arguably the most passionate fans. they NEVER stop cheering during a match. i experienced this at white hart lane. we were away, yet we were cheering 10 times more than the tottenham faithful. i have watched many arsenal games, man the arsenal fans are a bunch of arrogant pigs. they don't even cheer. especially when arsenal plays against lowly teams like wolves. they are like watching a tennis game, cheering only when the goal comes. that is why i really can't stand arsenal.. football is fans+players. i also think arsenal players play for personal glory more than anything else. anyway, i just wanna say i think manutd fans have the most number of different types of cheers..haha..they don't just keep singing the same song (like liverpool and their "you will never walk alone")..they have cheers/chants for almost EVERY player. even diego forlan, can u believe that..

i have to say that after watching man u play live and witnessing the passion of the manutd supporters surrounding me at the stadium, my love for manchester united is firmly cemented. i thought the leeds fans were great..the manutd fans were 10million times greater. oh man..words cannot describe the passion..u must taste it for urself..
"for the message of manutd is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of passion" revised and taken out of context from 1 Corinthians 1:18.

"do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" taken out of context from Romans 12:21. you heard that, liverpool?

actually i kinda like liverpool..i like their fans..the way they cheer so passionately even when the team is not performing..i like teams with rich history..liverpool is definitely one of them..but the thing that really makes me like liverpool is the kop end..last time, when anfield was without seats and supporters all had to stand up, the kop stand would hold the number of people the other 3 stands would presently hold (with seats) today. can u just imagine that.. only the most passionate fans would buy tickets at the kop end..the kop was known for its intimidating cheers..well..u can just imagine the volume..
i love all english football clubs, with the exception of arsenal and chelsea because of personal reasons, because they all contribute to the beauty of the beautiful game.

Glory Glory ManUtd.

what up lads. ivan chan it's nice to hear from you again. once again, RJC ROCKS. R-A-F-F-L-E-S RAFFLES!
well, just like to make clear that the score against roland and co. is 5-1, not 5-0. the goal of course was scored by David Lim, top striker of SJFC. not like i'm braggin or anything. well, it has indeed been a hectic week, even more so a hectic day. i started of waking up at 830, breakfasting then playing piano, then rushing to clementi to play soccer, then moving household furnitures to get 20 bucks, then taking a cab to thomson for piano lesson, then taking a bus back home to bathe, then taking a cab to church for music practise, then taking a bus to orchard to dine and wine with friends, before taking a bus back home, sitting in front of the screen now... tmr will be just as hectic. I NEED A VACATION MAN!

anyway just to let everyone know, brenda's pinch is lethal. when she pinches, a strong sensation is immediately felt, then after 3 seconds, a searing pain is experienced, and the whole body enters a state of semi-consciousness. then very slowly only does the pain subside, but still leaving a tingling feeling at the point of the attack. definitely a pinch you don't wanna get.

Long, long, post from a long-lost friend!

can you believe it... I stay healthy for 9 days in the army, and then on my book-out day (today) I contrive to get a sore throat and a fever. Dammit.

Ooh... lots of material to comment on.

"made some ri friends, really cool people. Going to learn pool from them sometime. "- David

ah-buh-then? haha I'm not going to play pool for the rest of my life; I have taken only one pool shot in my 18 and a half years of existence- trying to get a ball into the corner pocket... well I mishit it, sliced it, and it went into the side pocket. so I'm 100% at pool... and I'm going to keep it that way!

Yeah, RJ rox!
---

"brenda, gabriel and i have officially entered what david describes as "the most trying year of my life" and i have no idea how to react" - Ryan

plenty of time before the Os man. Just keep up with your work and relax... until June or something. Then start revising; during your prelims, start panicking, from prelim to the Os, start anticipating, after the Os, start partying.

---
"Ryan's rant about NS"

the army is basically all about cover-ups. Paunchy, grizzled, high-ranking officers pompously declaiming the merits of NS, how things have changed and how recruits are now treated much better- when it's all a show for outsiders...

but hey, if you got good bunk and platoon-mates in the army, it is tolerable, and even sometimes fun.

You all just enjoy your pre-army years first, and don't worry.
---
"Ivan did a good job analysing each player's strength, weakness and playing style. Not sure whether he has thrown that masterpiece away..."

He hasn't!

Goalkeeper: Derrick Wong
Agile goalkeeper, brave shot-stopper. But distribution could be better and is prone to errors. Similar to: Mark Bosnich

Left-Back: Lye Jun Xu
Tenacious defender and superb man-marker. Technique suspect. Similar to: Martin Keown

Centre-Back: Anantha
Tough-tackling defender of great strength. Loves to crack thunderous, if inaccurate, shots. Similar to: Stuart Pearce

Centre-Back: Jeremiah Woo
Formidable stopper, almost impossible to get past. Great vision and technique... weakness in upper body strength (can't do pull-ups). Similar to: Marcel Desailly

Right-Back: Gabriel Sim
Pacy right-back, with good tackling (was from rugby). But poor positional sense. Similar to: Cafu

Centre-Midfielder: Au Kai Min
Good passer, possesses attacking instinct and mercurial right foot. However often loses control of the midfield. Similar to: Joe Cole

Centre-midfielder: Caleb Chua
St James' own Captain Marvel, shows true leadership on the pitch to go with gritty tackling and visionary passing (likes the lob). Temper can be a problem. Similar to: Patrick Vieira

Left-winger: Ryan Kam
A dazzling dribble, startling pace and a smart footballing brain make him a quality winger. But he does not take on defenders enough. Similar to: Harry Kewell

Right-midfielder: Joshua Chua
Good distributor, supports both defense and attack ably. Blighted by lack of pace. Similar to: Claude Makelele

Striker: Kenny Khairon
Blindingly quick striker who can cut past most defenders. Has skill enough to get into great crossing/shooting positions, but final touch can be poor. Similar to: Thierry Henry

Striker: David Lim
Proverbial "fox-in-the-box", great finishing and pace. However, not suited to play target man. Similar to: Francis Jeffers
---

didn't do the reserves, cos I don't know how to rate myself. heh.

Most Bizzare Goal of the Year: Caleb Chua (vs. The Dads) - picks the ball up at the halfway line, wacks it with height and distance. players run back to prepare for a goal-kick. meanwhile, the ball sails into the net. 3-1.

Of pig noses and fried coffee. brenda, gabriel and i have officially entered what david describes as "the most trying year of my life" and i have no idea how to react - well there are two extremes - start chionging all the way and be in risk of running out of steam when november comes, or start slacking all the way and be in risk of running out of study-time when november comes. anyway, i'm proud to announce that i have been appointed captain of sji gym! wot an honour. wot a surprise. free cca point.
not to digress, it's interesting to know that i'll be one of the very few people taking the o levels while they are still 15. so if i screw up, i have a good excuse to give. and i'm already thinking of life after o levels - how i'll spend that first 3 months.. and yeah, wot ivan says is true..the fun that supposedly comes after the exams, actually comes before the exams. the fun is in the anticipation...and i'm thinkin of ways i would be able to spend my life should the singapore army free me from the 2-and-a-half year sentence. so much can be done in two and a half years. i have neither condemned the PAP nor spit at a member of parliament. wot have i done to deserve imprisonment. wot have i done to owe singapore nine-tenth of my hair.

national service is kidnapping the innocent into jail. just like a prison cell - you can't escape, you are locked in, you are not allowed to get out. what's more, you are deprived of your tv set, radio set, computer set, together with its keyboard, mouse, mousepad, monitor, speakers, silicon chips, aluminium casing, brightness control buttons, contrast control buttons, sound control buttons, microsoft word, microsoft powerpoint, internet explorer, soccernet.com. you are forced to replace your pet dog with a pet cockroach, your guitar with a rifle, your 6 strings with 6 bullets. you are trained to handle a gun and throw grenades so that one day you can murder someone and go to hell.

you are forced to tell your friends that ns is all good and fun and cool. and that you have enjoyed 2 and a half years of fun in the sun. christopher ng of st james church did not comply to this rule, telling jymers the truth that ns is hell. thats why he has been sent to exile in australia.

ns is for national slavery.

if you want to be a criminal, join the army full time and be a sergeant and you gain the right to steal without having to go to court. just call it confiscation.

alright, i'm more or less done.
